Saint Arnold Brewhouse Blog: Saint Arnold Austin Scavenger Hunt Pub Crawl

Watch the video that we have posted in a few places (in case you have difficulty viewing the one at the bottom of this post). The video will show specific objects with which you need to take a picture of yourself (i.e., have both you and the object in the same photo). All of the objects are in Central Austin and in establishments where you can find good beer, and enjoying a Saint Arnold while on your quest may bring you enlightenment!

Sweet, we did this today and found all six places quite easily. Had a beer in a few of them and shared some good times and stories. Can't wait for the party itself. We saw quite a few folks along the way doing the same as we were, so we assume it'll be a good party.

    Single Stream Recycling Hits Austin

We got our awesome new single stream recycling bin today. Finally, a better way to recycle and try to end the waste of sending it to the dump. Plastic 1-7! It was 1-2, which was such a pain. Thanks to the CoA for implementing this new program and I'm hoping that it's a great success. We're certainly looking forward to see how much waste we can reduce. If it hasn't hit your neighborhood it should very soon. If you want to know more just check out the FAQ's. Oh, and did I mention it's a nifty blue speckled cart? :-)

Austin Laser Art @ Screenburn Arcade

Ever wanted to personalize your laptop or phone with some cool art? Austin Laser Art will be down at the Screenburn Arcade offering free iphone and laptop etching to the folks they are able to serve. It's pretty darn cool. Check out their Flickr stream for more photos. Screenburn Arcade is this Saturday and Sunday and is open to the public.

    Austin Explorer Website

I ran across a very cool site today, Austin Explorer. Not sure how I've never seen it before. It's run by Rob Barron. I was looking to answer a history question about Buford Tower, and his site had my answer! Thanks for settling a bet Rob. :-)

    Spec's Soft Opening

Spec's had their soft opening last Friday, and we couldn't hold ourselves back.  We felt like Nic Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. You'll have to take our word that the snapshot above is the first of three Austin stores, but there it sits, at 290 and Airport. Though they're still working with their distributors to get all of their wares in place, they promise it'll be ready for the grand opening this weekend.

    BBQ for SXSW

I just want to forewarn you that BBQ debates are something we take very seriously in Texas. Canter and Scoble are discussing BBQ for SXSW. Sadly they think that Salt Lick is "the best" around. Richard says that locals say Rudy's is the best, I can only hope he's making wordplay with their slogan. Otherwise I'm not sure what he's thinking. :-) That's just cuz we don't share our secrets around here with outsiders. :-)

I'll be glad to take you somewhere good. Just drive over a little east and hit Ben's Long Branch. Otherwise bbq perfection is just a short 40 minute ride. There are some good places in Austin, but the best places are a little further out. Head to Lockhart and hit one of the best BBQ places ever, Kreuz Market. Anyone up for a geek BBQ trip? I've got a car that seats 8. I can't believe SXSW is so close.

Let's Go Ice Bats: Straight To The Bottom!

My letter to the editor of the AAS, it'll never get published but I had to share my feelings. I am truly heartbroken.
    ---
Today is the saddest day in a long time for my family, today I turned in my
Ice Bats Season tickets. A little back-story for those of you who don't
follow the CHL level Austin hockey scene, which is most people in Austin.
After ten years in another location the Austin Ice Bats management made a
desperate move to get away from the Travis County Expo Center (TCEC) and move
to Chaparral Ice on I-35, an ice skating practice arena. Promising great new
digs, "nothing like the old Chap," and an awesomely renovated space. Instead
I believe they sat on their rear all summer and then hastily hired a 7th
grade shop class to finish out the space. As the saying goes... "you can put
lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."

Austin now has what has to be the saddest "arenas" in the league. I couldn't
even be mad, just depressed.  The club's argument is that it was either this
or nothing. I almost have to believe that nothing would have been better.
After biding their time for years hoping for a Cedar Park miracle this was
all they could pull off when the long shot didn't come through. Moving closer
to downtown, the club has taken what could have been a golden opportunity and
    laid a huge goose egg.

After following them for the last 10 years and being a Season Ticket Holder
(STH) for 6 of those, making road trips and donating food and housing items
to players we knew by first name, this is a pathetic way to end my love of
the team. I will shed a tear every weekend not seeing "MY" Austin Icebats
play, but seeing them play in that location would be equally as sad. I
offered to gather fans together as a STH advisory panel and help in any way
we could, but was rebuffed as not being needed. After going to the STH game
Friday night, it was apparent that they needed help of some kind but refused
to either seek or hire said help. Having this location forced off on STH's
and fans as just as good as the TCEC, or any other arena in the league, is a
sham. STH's all around me were shocked and appalled at what we saw. It can
only be explained as a travesty of planning and thought, as there obviously
was none going on in the front office. Management should be ashamed and
apologetic. Sorry Macker, sorry boys, there is no Joy in Chapville tonight.
